Harris Youth Avitaion Center Construction Outside construction on the new Charles W. Harris Youth Aviation Center has been completed! Inside work continues, including the installation of air-conditioning. The building will be finished in time for our June Work Weekend, when volunteers will assemble furnishings, unpack tools, and make sure that everything is ready to go for the youth programs set to take place in July. Behind the scenes, our Charles W. Harris Youth Aviation Center chairmen, AC and Sue Hutson, are working to put together learning activities that will be both fun and educational. They’re also looking for volunteers to help during the week of AirVenture, so if you’d like to inspire the next generation of aviation enthusiasts, email vintage@eaa.org for more information! 2024 Vintage Work Weekends Want to earn volunteer hours and have fun, all while helping to prepare the Vintage grounds and buildings for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, 2024? Join us for our 2024 Vintage Work Weekends, May 17th – 19th and June 21st – 23rd! There are jobs available for all abilities and skill levels, so everyone is welcome! It is with great sadness that the Vintage Aircraft Association announces the death of VAA Director Emeritus Bob Lumley, who passed away on Tuesday, January 30th, 2024. A native of Athens, Georgia, Bob retired as vice president of a Milwaukee-based construction firm. He soloed in 1968 in a Piper PA-11 and held a commercial pilot certificate. Bob was a lifetime EAA and Vintage Aircraft Association member. He was also a charter member of VAA Chapter 11 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. A volunteer since 1981, Bob designed and managed the construction of additions to the iconic Vintage Red Barn, the Vintage Hangar, as well as other Vintage buildings. For years Bob also managed the Red Barn Gift Shoppe. Bob was also a volunteer at Pioneer Airport, participating in its Young Eagles program with more than 300 missions. He served as Santa for the EAA AirVenture Museum Christmas In The Air” program and was on the Vintage Nominating Committee. Bob served as Chairman of Vintage Pioneer Video during AirVenture. In 2009 Bob was a recipient of EAA’s President’s Award. The Vintage Aircraft Association is excited to host Aeronca Nation 2024 at this summer’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.
